At the beginning of the year the inside of the studio is again painted a clean white for a fresh start…
Maree White works in an old converted cowshed near Whakatane , Eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The clear clean spaciousness of this workspace is also what she tries to attain in her work of New Zealand landscapes.
Growing up in Waimate, South Canterbury, White knew she was going to be an artist at the age of ten when she held her first exhibition of oil paintings in 1975. Shortly after she moved to Ikamatua , in the Grey Valley on the South Islands West Coast. Later on while living in Reefton, Maree was commissioned to paint a number of murals around the town.
After shifting back to Waimate in her late twenties further murals were painted for a local night club , a music store, a restaurant and a ighting company in the film industry called Local Action in Queenstown. For the Local Action the mural depicted crew, equipment and landscape in a 2mx9m image.
White, a self taught artist, currently paints with Artelier acrylics on quality canvas imported from Invercargill. Every year she travels to different parts of New Zealand on a photo shoot and then returns home to the studio to concentrate on producing the work.
White specialises in creating landscapes of clear, heightened realism through the use of dramatic lighting and bright colours.
Over the last twenty years she has exhibited solo shows in Southland, Canterbury, the McKenzie district, Dunedin, the Hawkes Bay, Raglan and the Bay of Plenty. White is also an art teacher to adults, enjoying sharing her skills and the joy of painting,
Maree is also a musician , specialising in original compositions of NZ edgy folk laced with the sounds of a cool retro Rhodes piano and a drizzle of dry humour. Swimming, surfing and attempts at meditation help keep the balance. For further info go to www.mareewhite .co.nz
