Narelle Huggins

New Zealand has been home to Narelle, her husband and three children since 2015. Australian born, and having lived in various parts of Victoria and outback Western Australia, they now call the Waikato home. The variety of landscapes in which her family has live is what most inspires Narelle’s work. With an endeavour to discover what makes a place unique, her paintings draw out a ‘sentimental connection to place’.

Trained as an architect and working in this profession for 13 years before picking up a palette knife, Narelle is largely a self-taught painter. Her architectural background informs her work in the way buildings are depicted in two dimensions within the landscape. This naive ‘elevation’ representation is also symbolic of the sometimes impermanence of the built form. Her ultimate inspiration however, is the natural landscape.

An advocate of handmade, her other passions include yarn based crafts such as knitting. She lives on a property just outside of Cambridge with her family and three sheep…whose fleece she one day plans to learn how to spin!
