Shona Mclean

Shona began a professional career as an illustrator and cartoonist during a stint in Sydney in the early 1980s. She worked for Sydney Morning Herald and various magazines and advertising agencies, winning the Australasian Art Directors’ Award for Black and White Illustration in 1983 before returning to live and work permanently in New Zealand.

Whist completing a university degree, Shona continued to supply illustrations and cartoons to publishers in NZ.

In 1988 after a move to Nelson with her family, Shona turned her attention to watercolours on paper and ceramics. She and her husband opened an art and ceramics studio which they still operate. Recent works involve a return to a combination of lines and words, often via the medium of etching and aquatints, where deceptively simple black and white line tone and texture accompanying a few carefully chosen words convey witty and thought-provoking observations..

She describes the etching process as demanding, fascinating and meditative and one that admirably suits her particular combination of humour and profundity, and love of line.
Heritage Gallery is very pleased to represent Shona.
