Ammonites have always held a sense of wonder and intrigue. Not only are they aesthetically stunning and technologically impressive but their fossils have survived to tell us stories that are millions of years old, so naturally I just had to cast some of these beautiful treasures in glass to add to my collection. The original ammonite I used is said to be a White Spine Ammonite Perisphinctes virguloidesor that was living in Madagascar 160 million years ago.
They are extinct marine creatures related to modern-day nautilus, octopus and squid. Their demise is believed to have been caused by a massive asteroid impact approximately 66 million years ago which is most famously known for also wiping out the non-avian dinosaurs. Ammonites appeared to have been dwellers in shallow waters whereas their relatives lived deeper in the ocean and as a result survived the impact.
Ammonites hold significance in scientific contexts as valuable guide fossils, helping to date rocks and understand past environments. Culturally, they have been associated with myths and legends, revered as symbols of protection, good fortune, and spiritual growth across various societies dating back to the Egyptians. In New Age philosophy they are believed to possess powerful spiritual and metaphysical properties.
The litle bags are a nod to the dim distant past where due to the symbolism they held they were often carried around in a medicine pouch.
