Periodically an artist commands immediate respect and praise for his skill at the application of the medium used and sensitivity of the construction of the composition. Such an artist is Tony Lewis. He is a master watercolourist.
His exquisite paintings have a professional approach to tonal values. His compositions convey a serene, atmospherical statement that is sure to please.
Tony was born in England where he served in the Royal Navy during the war after which he attended art school in London, where later his business was in advertising. In 1963 Tony moved to New Zealand with his wife and family. He continued in the field of advertising until 1975 when he began to paint professionally, his medium being watercolour. 1980 saw him travelling throughout the country as A.N.Z.A.S. tutor and for many years, teaching at various groups and societies, also judging numerous art awards.
He was regarded as one of New Zealand’s top watercolourists and has had articles published in this country and in international art magazines.
For family reasons, Tony and his wife have moved to Australia’s Sunshine Coast where he continues to paint, teach and exhibit with great success.
His paintings are in private collections in NZ, Australia, Canada, USA, England and Japan.
