Cleansed by the wind, washed by the rain, and warmed by the sun, all doubts are swept away and I am set free. Fly o free spirit, fly.

~ Purea nei e te hau, horoia e te ua, whitiwhitia e te rā mahea ake ngā pōraruraru makere ana ngā here. E rere wairua e rere.

“Purea Nei” is a waiata / song - It speaks of the wairua (spirit) being lifted and carried toward the light, with troubles and restrictions falling away. The imagery of wind, rain, and sun reflects the healing power of the natural world, while the refrain “Makere ana ngā here” reminds us to let go of what holds us back. This print is for a space of reflection, for honouring someone’s memory, or as a gift to offer encouragement and a sense of renewal.

This waiata, written by composer Hirini Melbourne, draws on a traditional Ngāpuhi proverb: “Hokia ki ō maunga kia purea koe e ngā hau o Tāwhirimatea” Return to your ancestral mountains to be cleansed by the winds of Tāwhirimatea. Tāwhirimatea is the Māori god of winds, storms, and rain, making this a powerful metaphor for renewal and release.
